The Facts About Madonna’s Costly Divorce

The Facts About Madonna’s Costly Divorce

It’s easy to be seduced by the romance of two well-known figures getting married. However, celebrity marriages are notoriously unstable. For example, Madonna married famous British director Guy Ritchie in 2000, but the couple got divorced eight years later in 2008. Considering Madonna’s significant wealth, it should be no surprise that the divorce involved a multimillion-dollar settlement.

Madonna started performing in 1979, and quickly became a music superstar in the 1980s. She scored many number one hits, including “Like a Prayer,” “Vogue,” and “Into the Groove.” Madonna’s provocative and controversial lyrics and performances fuelled public intrigue and helped her to become the best-selling female recording artist of all time. She was married to actor Sean Penn from 1985 to 1989, and married director Guy Ritchie in 2000.

The Divorce

Madonna and Guy Ritchie announced their divorce in 2008, citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce was finalized in December of that year. Madonna has said that their romance died out, and that Ritchie’s unusual behavior contributed to the divorce. Ritchie described their marriage as a “soap opera.” Despite the high-profile nature of their relationship, Madonna and Ritchie sought to keep their divorce as quiet as possible, unlike the highly publicized divorce of Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills earlier in 2008.

Legal Ramifications

At the time, Madonna had a net worth of approximately $500 million, while Guy Ritchie was said to be worth about $50 million. Ritchie was legally entitled to half of the wealth Madonna accumulated during their marriage, and reportedly received somewhere between $75 million and $90 million. The two opted to share custody of their two children, Rocco and David.
