Michael Jordan’s 168 Million Dollar Divorce
Every year, more than one million American couples get divorced. High-profile divorces get a lot of attention in entertainment news—particularly those that involve large sums of money. For example, basketball great Michael Jordan split from his wife, Juanita Vanoy, in 2006. Michael Jordan reportedly paid his ex-wife $168 million, making it one of the costliest divorces in history.
Michael Jordan is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time. Upon entering the NBA in 1984, Jordan became famous for his extraordinary slam dunks, which earned him the nickname “Air Jordan.” Michael Jordan won a total of six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, and earned millions as a spokesman for Nike. He and Juanita Vanoy got married in September of 1989 and had three children together.
Michael Jordan and Juanita Vanoy filed for divorce for the first time in 2002, but were able to reconcile before the divorce was finalized. The two filed for divorce again in 2006, and the divorce was finalized in December of that year. Though Michael paid Juanita an astounding $168 million, Michael and Juanita insisted that the divorce was amicable. Michael Jordan got remarried in 2013, and Juanita has not remarried.
As with most divorces, there were a number of issues that Jordan and Vanoy needed to sort out before their split could be finalized. Juanita received such a large settlement because she had become accustomed to a lavish lifestyle during her marriage to Michael. Juanita also received the seven-acre Chicago-area property and was awarded custody of their three children. Today, Michael and Juanita’s children are fully grown and have begun their professional lives.
